The following is an archive of events from our 2018-19 season.  Events organized by our Centre are designated as RCCO Kingston Centre Events, while other events are listed as Events of Interest.

RCCO Kingston Centre Event
Road Trip to Napanee  Saturday, September 22, 2018

Various locations in and around Napanee.  This day-long event is an organ crawl to area churches combined with lunch at the Waterfront River Pub, 22 Water Street West, Napanee, and a visit to the Canadian Piano Museum, 138 Robinson Street, Napanee.  For more information, contact David Cameron at 613-549-7125 or by email.

Travis Mendel and Denis Gagné in Concert  Sunday, November 18, 2018, 4:30 p.m.

St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, 201 Church Street, Belleville.  Trumpeter Travis Mendel from Ottawa and organist Denis Gagné from Montreal will offer a “valves and pipes” concert, featuring several Canadian works.  A reception will follow.  For more information, visit St. Thomas’ website.

RCCO Kingston Centre Event
College Service  Sunday, November 25, 2018, 4 p.m.

St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, 201 Church Street, Belleville.  The College Service is our annual celebration of the College and the Centre.  It is ecumenical.  Members of the public are encouraged to attend the service.  Organ preludes begin a half-hour prior.  The Rev. Brad Beale, rector of St. Thomas’, and the Rev. Kris Michaelson, chaplain of the RCCO Kingston Centre, will officiate.  Centre scholarships for 2018-19 will be presented to our organ students.  Organists and their choir members are invited to participate in a massed choir.  A Kingston rehearsal for participants will take place at St. George’s Cathedral on Saturday, November 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.  Participants may also rehearse at the normal choir practice time of St. Thomas’ Church.  All choristers are asked to meet at St. Thomas’ at 2:45 on the day of the service.  For more information, contact our host, Francine Nguyen-Savaria.

Michael Capon in Concert  Thursday, November 29, 2018, 12:15-12:50 p.m.

St. George’s Cathedral, 270 King Street East (at Johnson), Kingston.  The organist of St. George’s, Michael Capon, will perform music by J.S. J.S. Bach’s Cantata 140 (Wachet auf)  Thursday, December 20, 2018, 12:15-12:50 p.m.

RCCO Kingston Centre Event
Twelfth Night Party  Sunday, January 6, 2019, 2:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Party room at Carol and Gord Ramer’s home, Kingston.  The Twelfth Night Party will be held on a Sunday afternoon this year, instead of a Friday evening.  All members, friends, and guests are welcome.  Bring a snack to share – an appetizer or dessert, and a drink for yourself if you like.  Coffee, tea, and non-alcoholic punch will be provided.  All are invited to contribute something entertaining, be it a story, song, quiz, or anything else.  There is a piano.

Matthieu Latreille in Concert  Sunday, January 20, 2019, 4:30 p.m.

St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, 201 Church Street, Belleville.  Matthieu Latreille, an organist at St. Thomas’, will present a solo organ recital.  The program will feature works by Mendelssohn, Reger, Merkel, and Bach, including the famous chorale prelude “An Wasserflüssen Babylon” employing the double pedal technique.  The pipe organ of St. Thomas’ is one of the finest in the Quinte area.  A live projection on a screen will allow the audience to see the organist performing.  A reception will follow.  For more information, visit St. Thomas’ website.

Event of Interest
Te Deum Laudamus  Saturday, February 16, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

St. George’s Cathedral, 270 King Street East (at Johnson), Kingston.  The Cathedral Chamber Orchestra and Concert Choir, directed by David Cameron, will perform music from England, including Handel’s “Queen Caroline” Te Deum and Stanford’s Te Deum in B flat, a survey of anthems from the 17th to the 20th centuries, and Boyce’s Symphony No. 1.  Also, our newsletter editor Fran Harkness will play Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in A, BWV 1035.  Freewill donations will go to the Cathedral’s Heritage Preservation Trust, which seeks to protect the historic building in its role as a venue for music and the other arts.

The King of Instruments  Saturday, February 23, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

St. George’s Cathedral, 270 King Street East (at Johnson), Kingston.  Orchestra Kingston joins forces with organist Michael Capon of St. George’s in a presentation of music for the “king of instruments” and orchestra, much of which has never before been performed in Kingston, including works by Debussy, Fauré, and Gounod, and the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saëns.  The concert will also feature an original work by Michael Capon.  For information about tickets, visit the orchestra’s website at orchestrakingston.ca/concerts.

RCCO Kingston Centre Event
Sarah Svendsen in Concert  Tuesday, February 26, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

St. George’s Cathedral, 270 King Street East (at Johnson), Kingston.  Canadian organist Sarah Svendsen will present a public organ concert on the evening of February 26 as part of the RCCO Kingston Centre’s 2018-19 season of programming.  A past laureate of the RCCO National Organ Playing Competition, Svendsen is a graduate of the Yale School of Music, and has performed in Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.  In September 2016, she made her symphonic debut as soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, for which her playing was reviewed to be “greatly virtuosic.”  Svendsen is scheduled for a return appearance with the WSO in November 2019.

Admission to the February 26 concert is pay-what-you-can to defray expenses.  The magnificent Cathedral organ was restored and expanded in 2012 and is now the largest pipe organ in the region.  Svendsen’s visit is made possible by the national RCCO Travelling Clinicians Program.  She will also present a special concert for young people from twelve area schools the following day.  For more information, contact Damien Macedo at 647-989-1920 or Charlie Walker.  Click on the following link to view the evening concert’s poster.

Great Bach Marathon and Community of Organists Concert  Saturday, March 30, 2019

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 130 Clergy Street East (at Princess), Kingston.  Last year’s event took place over five hours on an afternoon in March and featured about 40 musicians and a variety of instruments, including piano, violin, oboe, flute, trombone, etc., followed by pieces played on the organ by RCCO members and students.  It was such a success, we decided to hold it again!  All lovers of the music of J.S. Bach are invited to listen or perform.  Come when you can and leave when you must!

Event of Interest
The Neighbours  Sunday, April 21, 2019, 4:30 p.m.

St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, 201 Church Street, Belleville.  On Easter Sunday, violinist Sofia-Marie Bergeron, classical dancer Paola Bergeron, and organist Francine Nguyen-Savaria will present a collaboration featuring works by Bach, Corelli, Veracini, and Vitali.  A reception will follow.  For more information, visit St. Thomas’ website.

RCCO Kingston Centre Event
Hymn Sing  Saturday, May 4, 2019, 2:30 p.m.

St. George’s Cathedral, 270 King Street East (at Johnson), Kingston.  RCCO members, friends, and local choristers from across the region are invited to participate in a massed choir for a hymn sing.  The new and traditional hymns will be introduced by Eric Friesen and the Rev. Andrew Johnston, and accompanied by a brass quintet.  Members of the public are encouraged to attend – and sing along!  A reception follows.  For more information, contact RCCO members Michael Capon of St. George’s Cathedral or Jeffrey Moellman of St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Something Old, Something New  Sunday, May 26, 2019, 2:30 p.m.

St. Mary’s Cathedral, 279 Johnson Street (at Clergy), Kingston.  St. Mary’s Cathedral hosts a concert to benefit the extensive restoration of the cathedral organ.  Music for solo voice, organ, piano, clarinet, violin, and choir will be performed by Jeffrey Moellman (Director of Music), cantors of the cathedral, Sammy Johnston (clarinet), members of the Moellman family (violin), and the new 20-voice Cathedral Youth Singers who will make their formal concert debut accompanied by well-known Kingston pianist Clare Miller.  Refreshments will follow.  Admission:  free-will offering, with tax receipts available for donations of $25 or more.

In its event publicity, the cathedral writes:  “Situated in the cathedral’s grand acoustics and architecture, the cathedral organ has been the ‘voice of the St. Mary’s Cathedral’ since its construction and installation in 1905 by the Karn-Warren Organ Company of Woodstock, Ontario.  It is a centrepiece of the musical heritage of Kingston and the surrounding region, and its restoration is of importance to the wider community.”

RCCO Kingston Centre Event
Annual General Meeting, Mini Organ Crawl, and Potluck Supper  Sunday, June 16, 2019, 3 p.m.

The home of Brad Mills and Sue Upham, Perth.  All Centre members and friends are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting at which plans will be made for the next season, including the appointment of Executive members and suggestions for the season’s programming.

The meeting will be preceded by a mini organ crawl of two or three pipe organs, starting at 3 p.m. in front of St. Paul’s United Church, 25 Gore Street West, Perth.  All the organs are within a five-minute drive.

The meeting begins around 4:30 p.m. at Brad and Sue’s and will be followed by a potluck supper.  Please bring a folding chair, beverage, and potluck contribution.  You are welcome to use the barbecue and pool.  For more information, contact Brad Mills by email or cell phone at 613-812-0871.  Hope to see you all there!

June Choirs Festival  June 7, 10, 12, 13, and 22, 2019

St. George’s Cathedral, 270 King Street East (at Johnson), Kingston.  St. George’s June Choirs Festival features four visiting choirs in five concerts.  The Libertas Male Choir from Toronto and the Groot Mannenkoor Nederland from the Netherlands, a total of 120 singers, perform on Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m., with tickets for $20 at the door.  The Didgori Ensemble from Georgia performs traditional Georgian folk music and chant on Monday, June 10, from 12:15 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. (a freewill offering is appreciated).  The St. Martin’s Boys’ Choir from Biberach, Germany, performs two concerts on Wednesday, June 12, and Thursday, June 13, both at 7:30 p.m.  The Stratford Concert Choir from Stratford, Ontario, performs on Saturday, June 22, also at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets for St. Martin’s and Stratford cost $20 in advance, at the Cathedral Office (129 Wellington Street) or the Church Bookroom (165 Ontario Street), or $25 at the door.  For more information, call 613-548-4617 or visit www.stgeorgescathedral.ca or www.facebook.com/StGeorgeConcerts.

Organ Dedication Concert in Sydenham  Saturday, June 29, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 4336 Mill Street, Sydenham.  RCCO Kingston Centre member John Hall is completing the relocation of a late-nineteenth-century, 10-stop Lye & Sons mechanical action instrument from a home in Deseronto to St. Paul’s in Sydenham.  The organ has been equipped to play selected additional stops through the Hauptwerk computer program.  RCCO members Damien Macedo and Michael Capon will perform on the organ and accompany a combined choir in works by Bach, Dupré, Mendelssohn, Howells, Parry, Tallis, and Willan.  Admission is by donation with a suggestion of $20 per person to help cover the costs of installing the organ and the life and work of the church.
